VEPT Practice Test

The VEPT (Versant English Placement Test) is Pearson's automated English test, used by schools and employers to place candidates by level. What is the VEPT?

The Versant English Placement Test is delivered entirely by computer in about 50 minutes. There's no human examiner: you speak your answers into a microphone and type the rest, and the system scores you automatically within minutes. It reports four skills — Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing — on Pearson's Global Scale of English (GSE 20–80), which maps onto the familiar CEFR levels (A1–C2). Because it's fast, consistent and unproctored-friendly, it's widely used for admissions placement and hiring screens.

What's on the VEPT? The 9 parts

Every VEPT is built from nine parts, each producing either a spoken or a typed response:

* Typing is a speed/accuracy check (at least 12 wpm) that gates the Writing score rather than counting as a skill of its own.

How the VEPT is scored

Each part feeds one of the four skills, and every skill is reported on the GSE 20–80 scale. Speaking is judged on pronunciation, fluency and sentence mastery; Listening and Reading on comprehension and accuracy; Writing on how completely and correctly you reconstruct and respond in text. How to prepare for the VEPT

• Practise speaking aloud. Read Aloud, Repeat and Sentence Builds all score your voice — get comfortable talking to a microphone at a natural pace.
• Train your listening memory. Repeat and Dictation reward holding a full sentence in your head, so rehearse those specifically.
• Type accurately and quickly. Writing parts need clean text at 12 wpm or more, or the Writing score won't count.
• Manage the clock. ~50 minutes across nine parts goes fast; full-length mocks build the stamina and timing.
